Mobile store audit scorecard

Open your store on a phone, answer twenty questions about discovery, delivery information, cart clarity and trust, and get a score with your biggest gaps listed first. Everything runs in this page; nothing is sent anywhere.

How to use it. Do this on an actual phone, not a browser resized on a laptop, and do it as a shopper: pick a product you sell, try to find it by the word a customer would use, check the delivery cost, add it to the cart and go as far as the payment screen without paying. Answer honestly; “Partly” is a legitimate answer. Weightier questions count more.

Discovery

Can a shopper find the right product quickly on a phone?

1. Does search return sensible results for the plain words shoppers use (for example, “cups” finds mugs)?Shopify analytics lists your top search terms; if the common ones return nothing, shoppers are leaving at the first step.
2. Does a misspelt search still find products?Mobile typing produces typos constantly. An empty page for “pilow” is an exit, not a correction.
3. Can shoppers filter collections by the attributes that matter: size, colour, price, in stock?Scrolling 180 products to find a size 10 in stock is work the store should do.
4. Are sold-out products pushed to the end of collections or hidden?Every sold-out item at the top of a collection is a tap wasted and a reason to doubt the rest.
5. Can a shopper reach any product from the home page in three taps or fewer?Deep menus on mobile cost taps, and each tap loses a share of shoppers.
Delivery information

Does a shopper know what delivery costs and when it arrives, before committing?

6. Is the shipping cost, or how to find it, shown on the product page before add to cart?Unclear delivery cost can make shoppers hesitate at the address step.
7. Can a shopper get a delivery-time estimate for their postcode before checkout?People buying gifts or for events need the date more than the price.
8. Is the free-shipping threshold visible where it changes behaviour, on the product page and in the cart?A threshold nobody sees does not lift order values.
9. Are the dispatch cut-off time and the “ships from” location stated?Knowing an order placed before 1pm leaves today changes whether people order today.
10. Is the returns policy summarised on the product page, not only in the footer? The returns question is asked at the moment of decision; answer it there.
Cart clarity

Does the cart tell the truth about the total, stock and the next step?

11. Does the cart show estimated shipping and a total before checkout?A total that grows at the last step feels like a trick, even when it is not.
12. Does the cart show stock status for each line (for example, only 2 left, or out of stock)?Finding out at payment that an item is unavailable loses the whole order, not just the item.
13. Can quantities be changed and items removed without leaving the cart?Friction in the cart compounds: every reload is a chance to leave.
14. Are express payment options (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, PayPal) offered at the cart?Mobile shoppers without a saved card often will not type one. Express options remove that.
15. Does the final total at payment match what the cart showed?Unexpected changes at payment are the most damaging kind of surprise.
Trust

Would a first-time visitor believe this store will deliver?

16. Are accepted payment methods visible before checkout?Shoppers check whether their method is accepted before they invest effort.
17. Is a human contact (phone or email, with hours) reachable in one tap?A reachable human is the cheapest trust signal there is.
18. Are reviews or other proof shown beside products, not only on a separate page?Proof works where the decision happens.
19. Does the store load usably on a mid-range phone over mobile data within about three seconds?Slow stores lose shoppers before the first product renders.
20. Is the business identity (ABN, location, returns address) findable from the footer?Australian shoppers look for an ABN and a real location before trusting a store they have not heard of.

    Reading the score

    • 80% and above: the fundamentals are there. Fix the listed gaps and measure.
    • 55% to 79%: shoppers are doing work the store should do. Use the listed gaps to choose a focused change and measure the result.
    • Below 55%: you are likely losing mobile orders at discovery or checkout. Start with delivery information and cart clarity; they are the fastest to fix.

The scorecard measures what a shopper experiences; it does not predict revenue, and a high score does not guarantee sales.

    Why these four areas

On a phone, buying is a chain of small decisions: can I find it, what will it cost to get here, is the cart telling me the truth, and do I believe this store. A weak link anywhere breaks the chain, and the links are usually cheap to strengthen compared with buying more traffic to push through a broken one.

Discovery questions come from the search terms and collection behaviour I see in Shopify analytics. Delivery questions come from the pre-sale emails stores receive, which are overwhelmingly about shipping cost and timing. Cart questions come from where mobile checkouts are abandoned. Trust questions come from what Australian shoppers look for before buying from an unfamiliar store. See all four in action on the demo store.
