Buying an Online Store: Technical Due Diligence

Before buying an online store, examine what is transferable and how the store operates. Technical checks complement financial and legal due diligence; a working homepage does not prove you can take over every dependency.

01

Check ownership and transferability

The domain, platform account, theme licences and app subscriptions may have separate owners and transfer rules. Record what the seller can transfer and what needs to be recreated. Do not assume access to the storefront includes all operating systems.

  • List accounts and owners
  • Check provider transfer rules
  • Record licences and subscriptions
  • Identify integrations and credentials
02

Inspect catalogue and order workflows

Review product data quality, stock ownership and fulfilment handoffs. Ask for evidence of how exceptions are handled. Manual work hidden behind a tidy storefront can become a significant operating burden after purchase.

  • Sample catalogue edge cases
  • Map stock and order systems
  • Review refunds and failed orders
  • Identify recurring manual work
03

Plan a controlled handover

A takeover needs account recovery, access changes, backups and a release plan. Any migration should preserve useful URLs and records where possible. The Store Check does not broker store sales or verify financial returns; technical scope is discussed separately.

  • Agree handover responsibilities
  • Back up relevant records
  • Plan domain and system changes
  • Test operations after transfer

A common question

Does The Store Check sell Shopify stores?

No. This is a technical planning guide, not a marketplace or brokerage. Financial and legal due diligence require appropriate independent advice.
